Timeline of Our History
The history of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology could be dated back to the inception of the Hong Kong College of Medicine, the predecessor institution of the University of Hong Kong. Teaching activities in “Midwifery and Diseases of Women” were commenced at the Alice Memorial Hospital by Dr. William Hartigan and Dr. Alice D. Hickling, and were subsequently moved to the Government Civil Hospital (now the Sai Ying Pun Clinic). Other teachers contributed to teaching in the early days of the Department included Dr. John C. Thomson, Dr. F.O. Stedman, Dr. A. Rennie, Dr. R.M. Gibson, Dr. P. Krieg, Dr. G.P. Jordan, Dr. W.V.M. Koch and Dr. Christopher Forsyth.

Opening of Tsan Yuk Hospital at the junction of Western Street and Third Street

March 1925
Professor Richard E. Tottenham, the first Chair of Midwifery, was appointed

November 1935
Professor William C.W. Nixon assumed headship

April 1937
Opening of Queen Mary Hospital. Teaching and clinical activities in Gynaecology were moved to Queen Mary Hospital where Obstetrics remained in Tsan Yuk Hospital

1938
Professor Gordon King was appointed Head of Department

1939
Second World War started, and the teaching activities were moved to Chong Qin

1945
The War ended, and the faculty was re-established shortly after
June 1955
Opening of the new Tsan Yuk Hospital at Hospital Road

1957
Professor Daphne W.C. CHUN assumed headship

1972
Retirement of Professor CHUN. Professor H.K. MA succeeded Professor CHUN as Head of Department

1981
Commencement of the Prenatal Diagnosis and Counselling Service and the Mrs. WU CHUNG Prenatal Diagnostic Laboratory at Tsan Yuk Hospital

1986
Commencement of the Assisted Reproduction Unit in Queen Mary Hospital
1988
First successful delivery conceived through assisted reproductive technology with in-vitro fertilization (IVF)
February 1991
Recognised as subspecialist training centre in gynaecological oncology by RCOG
July 1995
Retirement of Professor H.K. MA. Professor P.C. HO succeeded Professor MA as Head of Department

1996
Establishment of the Lady Helen Woo Women's Diagnostic and Treatment Centre at Tsan Yuk Hospital
July 1998
Recognised as a subspecialist training centre in reproductive medicine by RCOG
2000
Relocation of gynaecological out-patient services to S Block of Queen Mary Hospital

April 2001
In-patient obstetric service and teaching was relocated to Queen Mary Hospital

November 2001
Recognised as a subspecialist training centre in maternal-fetal medicine by RCOG
November 2002
Recognised as a subspecialist training centre in gynaecological oncology by the Hong Kong College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists
July 2003
Recognised as a subspecialist training centre in reproductive medicine by the Hong Kong College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists
December 2004
First successful delivery by thalassaemia couple conceived through assisted reproductive technology with Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD)

2008
Recognised as a subspecialist training centre in maternal-fetal medicine by the Hong Kong College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists
January 2009
Professor Hextan Y.S. NGAN succeeded Professor P.C. HO as Head of Department

July 2012
Commencement of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Hong Kong–Shenzhen

April 2015
Professor Ernest H.Y. NG assumed the position as Chief of Service

2021
Professor Karen K.L. CHAN succeeded Professor Hextan Yuen-Sheung Ngan as Head of Department and COS as Chief of Service of Queen Mary Hospital
